Celebrated on January 1st, this feast emphasizes Christ's full humanity and His submission to the Mosaic Law. It also commemorates the giving of the name "Jesus" (meaning "God saves") and is often combined with the feast of St. Basil the Great.

The Archbishop of Caesarea and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, defender of Orthodox theology against Arianism. Celebrated on January 1st, Basil wrote the Divine Liturgy bearing his name and established principles of monasticism. The service emphasizes water as a gift from God and a symbol of purification and life.

The sacrament of initiation into the Orthodox Church, through which a person is united with Christ in His death and resurrection. The baptismal candidate is immersed three times in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ. Baptism cleanses from original sin, grants adoption as God's child, and makes the person a member of the Body of Christ. In Orthodox practice, baptism is immediately followed by chrismation and first communion.
